Step-by-step guide
Copy the post link in the X app
Open the post, tap the Share icon (the arrow under the post) and choose Copy link. A link from x.com or twitter.com both work.
Open this page in Safari
Use Safari rather than the in-app browser of X, which cannot save files. Tap the input field, choose Paste, then tap Download video.
Pick a quality and confirm the download
Tap the quality you want. Safari asks "Do you want to download x-….mp4?" — tap Download. A blue arrow appears in the address bar while it saves.
Open the file in Files › Downloads
Tap the download arrow in the address bar and then the file, or open the Files app and go to Browse › iCloud Drive › Downloads (or On My iPhone › Downloads).
Tap Share › Save Video
With the video open, tap the Share icon in the bottom-left corner and choose Save Video. It now sits in Photos under Recents, ready to post, edit or send.
Why this is tricky
The X app has no save button for videos, and pressing and holding a video only offers sharing options. On iPhone the fix takes two stages: Safari downloads the MP4 into the Files app, then you move it into Photos yourself. Most people get stuck on the second stage because the video never appears in their camera roll on its own.
Frequently asked questions
Safari saves them to the Files app, in the Downloads folder on iCloud Drive by default. You can change this under Settings › Apps › Safari › Downloads (Settings › Safari › Downloads on iOS 17 and earlier), for example to On My iPhone so they do not use iCloud storage.
iOS keeps browser downloads in Files, separate from your photo library. Open the video in Files, tap Share and choose Save Video to copy it into Photos. You can then delete the copy in Files to free space.
Scroll the list of actions — Save Video sits below the row of apps. If it is still missing, the download probably did not finish: check that the file in Files plays, and download it again on a stable connection if it does not.
Yes. Chrome on iOS saves the file to Files › On My iPhone › Chrome instead of the Downloads folder; the Share › Save Video step is the same. Safari is simply the shortest route because its downloads list is one tap away.
Yes, with the same steps. On iPad the download arrow appears at the right of the Safari toolbar, and Files opens in a sidebar layout with Downloads listed under iCloud Drive.
