From Twitter to X: what changed for downloads

Twitter became X in 2023, and in 2024 the service moved its main address from twitter.com to x.com. For people saving videos, surprisingly little changed underneath: posts kept their numeric identifiers, and videos are still delivered from the same media servers. A post that was shared as a twitter.com link years ago and the same post opened today on x.com point to exactly the same video.

This page is tuned for the current x.com addresses that the X app produces when you tap Copy link, but you never need to rewrite a link by hand — both domains are accepted.

Anatomy of an X post link

A typical link looks like x.com/username/status/1790000000000000001?s=20. Each part has a job:

  • username — the account that published the post. It can change if the account is renamed, which is why it does not matter for finding the post.
  • status/1790… — the post ID. This number is what actually identifies the post, and it is the only part we use.
  • /photo/1 or /video/1 — added when you open a specific media item. We remove it automatically.
  • ?s=20 and ?t=… — share parameters added by the app. The t value can identify the person who shared the link, so we strip it before doing anything else.

Because only the ID matters, a shortened or slightly edited link still works as long as the number is intact.

Saving X videos on a desktop computer

On Windows, macOS or Linux the file goes wherever your browser saves downloads — usually the Downloads folder. A keyboard-only flow is quick: on the post, press Ctrl+L (Cmd+L on a Mac) and Ctrl+C to copy the address, switch to this tab, paste into the field and press Enter, then Tab to the version you want and press Enter again.

File names include the post ID, for example x-1790000000000000001-hd.mp4. That makes it easy to find the original post later, which helps when you need to credit the creator or check whether a clip is still online.

Choosing the right resolution

Bigger is not always better. As a rule of thumb, based on the bitrates X typically uses:

  • Full HD (1080p): roughly 40–75 MB per minute. Choose it for editing, presentations or large screens.
  • HD (720p): roughly 15–20 MB per minute. The best everyday choice for laptops and phones.
  • SD (360p and similar): roughly 5–7 MB per minute. Ideal for sending in chats or keeping on a phone with little free space.

The exact size of each version is displayed next to its download button whenever X reports it, so you can decide before downloading.
